You’ve put the hours in, you’re super psyched about passing your test – but have you got every single angle covered?

It’s surprising some of the things learners forget to do on the day of their driving test – and in some cases, those things mean you can’t actually take your test.

Here’s how to double check you’re good to go:

1. Include your mobile number when booking

That way you’ll get a free text reminder from the DVSA about your test date 6-10 days before your test. Think you don’t need one? Think again – find out why here

2. Make sure your instructor is available for your test

Before you book your test, do check that your instructor – and their car – will be available on your big day. According to the DVSA, 13% of learners don’t turn up for their test because a driving instructor wasn’t available.

3. Check your car is test-ready too

If you’re coming in your own car, make sure it’s fit to be used; think insurance for a driving test, L plates, an additional mirror, and more. Check out this list to ensure your car is good to go.

4. Please don’t forget the obvious…

Incredibly, there are learners who turn up to their test with no provisional driving licence. Without it, the test centre can’t confirm your identity so you’ll be shown the door.

5. Be on time – or else

Turn up to your test in plenty of time as examiners are already working to a tight schedule to clear the driving test backlog. If you’re late, you can expect your test to be cancelled.

6. Book the right way

Book your test through your instructor or through the official online booking service here. You may be tempted by third parties and online sellers – but there is a risk if, say, you test date is changed, you won’t be notified.

7. Ask yourself honestly: “Am I ready?”

It’s a big question and one you should discuss with your instructor. If you both feel that you’re not quite there yet, then rebook your driving test. Your existing slot can then be passed on to someone who is ready.
