Is your pride and joy a Bertha or a Beast? A new survey has uncovered the most popular names given to cars by UK owners.

Auto broker Carwow asked 1,000 motorists to reveal the names they’ve given to their cars with Bob proving to be the most popular among males and Betty among females. Other top-scoring names include Fred, Baby and Harry but plenty of oddities cropped up in the survey as well including Moby Dick and Mr Darcy.

But the survey reveals that naming your car isn’t always a sign of affection – owners who aren’t happy with their motors listed Loser Cruiser, Oink Oink and Costly as names for cars that are most likely a chain and ball for their owners, rather than a much cherished mode of transport.

Naming cars might seem strange to some – but nearly half of UK drivers do it according to the AA with women (50%) more likely to christen their cars than men (33%) while 18-24 year-olds are the most likely age group to give their motor a name; a whopping 70% do it in fact.

According to the Carwow survey, the top ten most popular car names are:

  1. Bob
  2. Betty
  3. Betsy
  4. Fred
  5. Bertha
  6. John
  7. Baby
  8. Bessie
  9. The Beast
  10. Harry
