New research by the AA Driving School reveals why so many learners are failing their theory test. The top five reasons are:
- Preparing for hazard perception (33%)
- Finding time to revise (30%)
- Terminology within the questions (28%)
- Knowing what to study (28%)
- Understanding road signs (27%)
Multiple challenges
Other issues include trying to figure out when you’re ready to actually sit the test (15%) as as well as finding suitable mock tests to judge your ability on (15%).
Where you live also appears to impact on your chances of theory test success. For instance, 54% of candidates in Northern Ireland say that a lack of hazard perception preparation led to a fail while in the North East, that figure stands at only 19%.
However, North Easterners say their biggest challenge was finding the time to put the required revision in with 40% failing to do so. Meanwhile, north of the border in Scotland, candidates didn’t struggle as much with only 25% having problems with their time management skills.
Big regrets
This lack of preparation for the theory test means 67% of respondents have regrets about not putting the work in. Not being sure of what you’re expected to do for your theory test is also a big problem with 47% saying they were not clued up.
That might explain why a whopping 59% of candidates said that stress and nervousness contributed to them failing on the big day.
Top three tips
With a little prep, many of the issues cited here can be overcome. Here’s how in three simple steps:
Get the Highway Code
This might seem obvious but learning the code is invaluable to theory test success so buy it here or download the free digital version here. Also, download the free online Know Your Traffic Signs leaflet from the Department for Transport here. With the latter, you’ll soon realise that many signs are self-explanatory or the penny will drop very quickly about more obscure signage – so don’t stress it.
Talk to your instructor
They’ll be able to tell you if you are ready to take your theory test as well as walk you through what to expect on the day of the test. Your instructor can also talk you through any worries you may have and help you manage your revision time as well as offer guidance on what you should be studying.
Use apps like Theory Test Pro
Theory Test Pro has been designed from the ground-up to help you with all aspects of the theory test. From hazard perception prep (featuring official videos) and understanding questions to taking mock tests, it’s the best possible way of familiarising yourself with the theory test process before taking it.
Bottom line? Those who use Theory Test Pro are twice as likely to pass their test – and with the current official pass rate standing at a meagre 45%, that’s an opportunity you can’t afford to miss.
