Passing your theory and practical driving tests takes time, commitment and, well, money. For some though, achieving test success appears to be out of reach and can become a hugely expensive process.
According to research by the AA Driving School, such spiralling costs are exemplified by the poor learner who has spent a huge £1,700 on 74 attempts (to date) to pass their theory test.
Too common
That might sound like the exception to the rule but the school’s data shows that over 9,000 people take between 10 and 20 attempts to finally achieve a theory test pass. Then there are the nine candidates who have taken over 50 tests but still haven’t managed to make the grade.
Now factor in practical driving test attempts. Research reveals that over 13,000 people needed between 10 and 20 attempts to finally get their hands on a driving licence while 269 candidates took more than 20 attempts and 16 over 30 attempts.
Failing on such an epic scale costs, too. For instance, the theory test costs £23 while the fee for the practical driving test varies depending on when you take the test – it’s £62 on weekdays during the daytime but it’s £75 for an evening, weekend or bank holiday slot.
Why the fails?
A lack of practise and confidence obviously play key roles but the AA Driving School’s research also reveals several reasons that can easily be avoided. For instance:
- 6,000 people arrived with a vehicle not deemed suitable… or without a vehicle at all.
- 252 drivers arrived with a vehicle that didn’t have L Plates.
- 604 failed the basic eyesight check at the beginning of the test.
Importantly, such basic errors are adding to the problem of long driving test waits – and causing serious frustration (as well as costs) for candidates who are actually test-ready.
“Drivers arriving unprepared for their theory and practical tests don’t just hurt their bank balance, but also the wallets of test-ready learners. The inability to obtain a slot means some [test-ready candidates] are still having lessons when they could have their full licence.”
