New research has revealed there’s one topic of the theory test’s multiple choice section that’s leaving many learners flummoxed on the big day. The multiple choice section is made up of several different topics to test your knowledge with one in particular causing more issues than others – the Rules of the Road.

These questions focus on rules such as how to navigate different junctions as well as speed limits.

However, one question in this section saw more than 136,000 wrong answers given in the first three months of 2024, according to research by the AA Driving School.

Big fails

Now compare that figure to those recorded for other sections:

  • 98,820 wrong answers for Safety Margins
  • 96,089 for Safety and Your Vehicle/Motorcycle
  • 93,488 for Alertness
  • 84,153 for Road and Traffic Signs
  • 83,546 for Vehicle/Motorcycle Handling
  • 81,172 for Attitude
  • 81,158 for Accidents
  • 75,619 for Road and Traffic Signs
  • 72,386 for Hazard Awareness.

Clued up

That represents quite the drop off. So what are the type of questions you can expect for the Rules of the Road element of the theory test? Try these before checking the answers at the bottom of this blog post:

  1. What is the national speed limit for cars and motorcycles on a dual carriageway?
  2. When are you allowed to enter a box junction?
  3. There are no speed-limit signs on the road. In England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, how is a 30mph limit generally indicated?
  4. Who is authorised to signal you to stop?
  5. How should you signal if you are going straight ahead at a roundabout?

“What is fundamental knowledge for driving, people slip up on far too often. The data shows too many people are failing their theory which adds extra cost and waits before they can take a practical test. At £23 per theory test the cost of retaking adds up."
