From May 9, don’t be surprised if you are asked to carry out the reverse park into a parking bay manoeuvre in any car park, not just in the test centre’s car park.

As you may already know, this manoeuvre could only be carried out in a driving test centre’s car park according to Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) rules.

The change might not sound like a biggie but think about it: If your driving test centre doesn’t have a car park, you would rightly assume that the manoeuvre isn’t something you need worry about on the big day.

In other words, you may not have practised the manoeuvre enough to ensure you’re successful.

Trial success

After a successful trial in February and March at 15 driving test centres across Great Britain, driving examiners can now carry out the reverse park into a parking bay manoeuvre in the same car park that they use for testing the forward park.

It’s a welcome change with examiners, approved driving instructors and candidates who took part in the trial all stating it was a positive step.

In the meantime, expect an update from your instructor about the change – plus expect more time to be given to practising the manoeuvre so you’re test-ready.
